At the Heart of Hiruharama is about Morna, a Māori, Scottish writer who grows up never knowing her Māori father, who left while she was still in the womb. When Morna's mother dies, Morna turns to writing in her grief. But it's not her voice that comes through on the pages, it's her father's. As she and her friend Mars travel to Cape Reinga, Morna also goes on a journey of self-discovery and finds her long-lost Māori ancestry.
